I just ordered pretty much all the home recordings from a collector...great shit. The cassette albums are much better than the later studio stuff. R. Stevie covered "I Wasn't Drinking" which can be found on YouTube. Also read Martin Newell's "This Little Ziggy" about his childhood and glam rock band in the 1970s. It's a nice memoir.
a handful of these tapes got reissued on burger records, unfortunately the best one (midnight cleaners) is out of print. "in the golden autumn" is still available and that is a pretty good one. love the cleaners!!! "only a shadow" and "wivenhoe bells 2" are a couple personal faves. newell also has a decent band after called brotherhood of lizards
i just came around to listening to what's available on youtube. so good!! i haven't come across something this exciting in early british "new wave" in ages. and never anything casette-only. did they have any other contemporaries? other DIYers, i mean.
there's a new cleaners tape! i can't remember what it's called, but burger records just put it out...first couple tracks are good, it kind of goes south/gets boring from there, but cool that he's still making musics
