Maus Space

I've continually had a liking for the mystical, but it wasn't until I matured a little iota that I discovered John Maus!

A friend of mine and I got into a conversation about trying to compile a list of songs Ariel has either musically referenced or borrowed melodies and lines from in the past. The prime example would be the "video killed the radio star" melody in Time To Live. Some other examples are Oceans of Weep which is a nod to a song called "Rapture" but I forget the artist, "Love me do" in Symphony for the Nymph, and Dutch Me sounds to me a lot like "while my heart is still breathing" by Roxy Music. Help me with some more! Sorry if this was already a previous topic, I can't find the thread if it exists. If so, just merge this one with that one ❤️

The “Elevators / Manufacturers” line in Black Ballerina seems to be a nod to R Stevie’s “Manufacturers” (1977). It has a similar robotic feel to the way he delivers the line.

He references RSM a bunch at live shows. Like in Want me, during that keyboardy part, he sings "Don't let me go to the dogs... (something something)" Which I always assumed was a nod to Stevie's song "Don't let me go to the dogs". Also a few times before he performed artifact on old concert films, he makes a reference to "The Future Is Worse Than The Past" an RSM album that came out in '01. Not sure if those count

I think the opening to "Feels Like Heaven" sounds like the chorus to "Head Over Heels" by Tears for Fears (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=CsHiG-43Fzg, around 1:10 for the first chorus). Also, the song overall reminds me a lot of, well, "(Feels Like) Heaven" by Fiction Factory (https://youtu.be/KQBoeBgb0uk).

I heard "Drivers Seat" by Sniff 'n' The Tears last night and I swear that Ariel has lifted/modified the main guitar riff from this song *somewhere* (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=9SCzVEU ... L&index=89, first at 0:57) . Off the top of my head I thought of "Talking all the Time" (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Fjvkvy1S7Qc) but I think it's somewhere else too. It might even be another artist that's lifted it, but I'd never heard this song until last night and the riff immediately sounded familiar. (Of course, "Talking all the Time" was partially reworked into "Pink Slime".)

The bass riff from "Round and Round" is very similar to that of "Broken English" by Marianne Faithful (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=-zF2xHZ8FDo). It also reminds me of Billie Jean.

"Mature Themes" reminds me of the chorus from "Cruel to be Kind" by Nick Lowe, and it also lifts some of the melody from "Babylon" by Aphrodite's Child (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=VW4Fe2LYJfw)

"Another Weekend" lifts the opening from "Private Number" by Judy Clay & William Bell (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=eeuVS6vnN7w)

Not that any of this is bad!!! PLENTY of artists do it. The Temples, for example, directly lifted the intro to "Midnight Rendezvous" by the Babys (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=QilPs3oT7vg) on "Shelter Song" (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=vs4i41cOv0s). <3

Someone should do for Ariel what Archives Listening did for Stereolab.

The song OP mentioned as the source of inspiration for Oceans of Weep, Rapture, is by Judy Henske and Jerry Yester, and it's absolutely fantastic in it's own right:

Other people have covered most of the known ones.

The 'Reminiscences' item really bugs me because it's clearly completely lifted but doesn't credit the original whatsoever. That's real bad.

I have a feeling he borrows from a lot more stuff that's just more obscure, his musical depth of knowledge is massive.

Reminiscences is from track 10 on the mixtape he released, Red Scare: The Derg Comp. It's by Yeshimebet Dubale. You can download it here: (I'm surprised the link still works!)

The first track by Girma Tefera is such a good song. If I remember correctly there's also a song resembling A Mistaken Wedding on there
