It seems a bit as if "Lover Boy" in general got overlooked by some people here. Is this possible?
When I think of Ariel Pink's big 3 records I think of Doldrums, Worn Copy and Lover Boy. Which one I like best, often changes. But I think these three are all killer and no filler (almost, "Blew Strauss/Blue Straws" is really weird, but sometimes I like even that).
I definitely agree with GOX2. I spent hours with a tracklist just made up of the 3 versions I have of this song.
I personally think that, except for Reminiscences, everything on the Flashback 7" gets overlooked. The title track is just such a hit. But since it appears on no regular record, most people might not stumble upon it. I also love "Rama Ya", what used to be "Oreo Cookie" because it sounds like an indian punk band. And I simply adore "Phantasthma" ("Fantasm" on Odditties Sodomies). Such a mellow track.
The 2 "bonus" tracks to Before Today, Shades Away and Mistaken Wedding, also get overlooked. I actually like them better than most songs on the actual record, though I think, that without them, it sounds more coherent. In Mistaken Wedding I just love the line "Well, life ain't easy, every day is worth a lot. Life ain't easy and you know I drink a lot".
