The Pixies

Post by AppTrans » Fri Jun 22, 2012 4:00 pm

Anyone here like the Pixies? One of my favorite bands ever! I saw them live in 2004 when they reunited, but it would have been far better to see them back in their day. Reminds me of the days when music was so fresh and exciting...at least upon first listening. Anyway, I have great admiration for this band.

might be my favorite album from the 80s
I should come up with a compilation of personal favorites
What are your favorite albums and songs by the Pixies?

OOOH, I love this kind of question friend
There are a lot of obvious tracks, so I'll treat this as a miniature playlist of songs from each of their albums:
Caribou (first track from Come on Pilgrim, pretty much the template of their sound)
Cactus (sexy)
I Bleed (sexier)
Rock Music (rocknroll)
Alec Eiffel (sans the cheap soundin keyboards at the end...oh alexander i see you beneath the archway of aerodynamics!)

I really like about half of Teenager of the Year. What a great title, too.

Did you ever like "Debaser", AppTrans? I could never understand why it's considered such a crucial Pixies track. :kebab:

What does the "kebab" emoticon actually mean?

It's more of an obligatory opener, not quite as good as the rest of their album openers...however IMO Doolittle is their most consistent album in terms of substance and catchiness. I can't say Debaser as a favorite

Obvious choices but Surfer Rosa and Doolittle are my joint favorites. They popularised the LOUDquietLOUD dynamic, but no one ever did it better! Frank Black's voice has always appealed to me as well - how his sweet, helium whine could transform into an abrasive bark at a moment's notice. "Broken Face" is probably my favorite song, always gets my pulse racing and my legs shimmying. I also love the "Head On" cover from Trompe Le Monde. Regretfully, I never got to see them live.

Great! Was about to ask if anyone else had seen it, a lot of tension in the band during the reunion tour by the sounds of it.
