Do we know what John's views are on matters of religion and belief, and how he would define (if any) his religious (or indeed non-religious) world-view? I am assuming that he is religious and Christian by the numerous religious references in his work. I'd be fascinated to know more about this part of him.

I was also curious about this, although it seems he is fairly private about it and never seems to be foisting his beliefs onto others. From the recent interview in Ghent it seems he ascribes to the basic Christian doctrines of 'seeking to understand' and 'loving your fellow man,' which is no bad thing. He definitely strikes me as a spiritual person, with his hopes that one's deeds in this life count (or should count) for something.

I think someone asked before but there weren't any replies. I was thinking about it again in the general music forum, too. Obviously if it's personal and none of my business, fair enough, but I am curious - as you say there have been many references to an afterlife and also a definite focus on Christian values in some of his work.

Thank you for offering an answer to my query guys. I'm a humanist and certainly find his soft religious references inoffensive. I’ll park my curiosity about his beliefs to one side, and look out for info in future.
