Weird shit happened in Atlanta last night. Local musician Bruce Hampton, a veteran of various jam bands and Americana groups since the early 70s, put on a concert at the Fox Theatre. I've met him a couple of times and several of my friends know him too (and were at the show last night; I wasn't). All kinds of big names showed up and joined him on stage at various times, and for the encore, all 30 or so of them came back on stage for one last blowout on the popular jam-band chestnut "Turn On Your Lovelight". A few minutes into the song, Bruce kneels down next to the guitarist soloing, and lies down leaning against the monitor. Everyone figured he was being theatrical (bowing down before the soloists or something like that). A couple of minutes later, guitarist Warren Haynes (Allman Bros, Government Mule) realizes something is wrong. The music stops as they discover he is unconscious and barely alive, in a pool of his own piss. The curtain falls, he's rushed to the hospital, and he's pronounced dead soon thereafter. Holy shit.
The youtube clip is out there already. Well shot, too - - this was a very "big" performance for him (hometown crowd, prestigious venue, famous guests, and his birthday celebration), so it was being well documented all the way. The video slowly fades out just as he's starting to collapse to the ground. As much as my morbid curiosity wants to see what happened next, I think they made the right decision not to show it. Freaky. Man.
