Maus Space

I've continually had a liking for the mystical, but it wasn't until I matured a little iota that I discovered John Maus!

The Remarkable Thing About Swans was founded by Julia Shammas Holter and Mali Swan as an outlet for furthering improvisatory and medieval urges into the 21st century.

The music is such a seamless merger of medieval pschizo-pop and Gregorian trip-hop, it makes it hard to believe there weren't such things as MIDI and drummachines in the 1430's.

Over the course of this fledgling new century, the Remarkable Swans has become the exclusive domain of New York school teacher and dark ages enthusiast, Mali Swan:

"This creature was born a woman but was well educated in her youth. She was married to a Rajput prince against her will at the age of thirteen. Widowed by fifteen, this creature was much pressured to enter into another marriage for the good of the kingdom but would not again bow to the pressures of those seeking worldly wealth and power. After traveling for long and weary years across the high mountains, treacherous seas, and parched deserts between Europe and her homeland, this creature eventually entered a monastery in the English countryside, where she took her vows under pretense of being male. Her ruse was soon discovered, and this creature was cast out in shame despite the eloquent defense she presented, which was based on the writings of Origen. This creature now wanders the world, singing to such birds, beasts, and men that may come across her path."
